Did You Even Remember What the Sun Looked Like?

Some of you are likely still in a state of shock. I know, I'm with you. The sun is out. For those of you with any sort of memory loss, let me remind you that the sun will keep us warm, hopefully dry up the last 10 days of Seattle style rain, requires us to wear sunscreen and sunglasses/hats/etc...Thunder, make sure you check the schedule and know which field you're playing on and which you're reffing on. It really helps speed things up. Read: We can get to the bar faster if everyone knows what they're doing.

Rain? What Rain?

Alright, Mother Nature, you get points for being persistent, but we're still playing this week. Unless you strike down some rampant tornado, we'll be getting started at 6:00 as usual. (And, FYI, if you do, we'll just wait until said tornado passes in our cars and then we'll play)

Week 3 is upon us and after last week, I think we may be bringing some new rivalry into the league. Not to worry, the competition carried over to the flip cup tables last week and I think we're in for an even bigger party tonight. Foxes, you were damn Foxy last week. The dance moves were impressive. NATP, you and FURM rocked and I mean ROCKED the flip cup tables. You are truly the essence of kickball. Nuggets, TGTN...ya'll are super fun and I hope to see more of that this week.

Bring some dry clothing, or take off the wet layers at the bar. Games are ON! See everyone in a few hours. And please please PUH-LEASE start reviewing the rules for reffing. Last week we were overwhelmed with questionable calls. Yeh, thanks.

Week Dos Recaps

From Kick Me With Your Best Shot
KMWYBS: 4
Kickin It: 2

Our rookie team has made its first victory! We started off strong in the very first inning with an exceptional team effort. Gary's kick in the first inning allowed Jon to get on 2nd, and for yours truly to round 3rd and get to home for the first run of the game. The next several innings had exceptional pitching battles as not many runs were scored - props to Eli for playing and pitching like a champ. MVP goes to Gary for his solo homerun to open up the fourth inning, stretching the lead and giving our team some breathing room in what turned out to be a close game. Lastly, thanks to Kaitlyn for her sweet cell phone tunes that no one could hear but her. Luckily her smooth dance moves on the sidelines didn't distract Melissa, who made an impressive catch off a high ball in left field. Unfortunately, due to the copious amount of beers and the deadly JD, I can't remember any more specifics from the game. However, we did sing an off-tune version of "Hit (Kick) Me With Your Best Shot" in between flip cup games. I apologize to anyone who was sober enough to really witness and remember this event.

From the FURM Project:
FURM- 1
Tigerblood- 5

Yeah.... so we played some kickball. Made some good plays, but fell short on runs. (Still not sure how someone managed to count as an out and a run, but hey, IJK.) Our victory of the night was on the flip cup table as we managed to outlast every opponent with our stellar teamwork and sheer prowess. The wall of blue stayed strong with some solid flipping and some hot dance moves. I could say more, but the pictures do it justice. Let's get FURM!

From It Burns when I kick
Kickin Nuggets- 1
It Burns When I Kick- 5

Our normal beat writer was on leave last night, hopefully nursing his bum ankle that has kept him on the side lines for most of the season. I’ll do my best to provide a breakdown of the events that occurred between the hours of 7:00pm and 8:00pm but don't expect me to quit my day job.

It Burns When I Kick (IBWIK) coming off a loss, was hungry for our first win, Kick Nuggets happened to be the team that had to face our wrath. Before the game It Burns questioned even being able to compete due to an injury plagued team. Captain Eric J Burns (pinched nerve), Lukasz with a Z (various ailments), Elvin (bum ankle/shoulder) were all placed on the DL prior to the games start. Oh and there was Dan who was MIA due to his trip to P-Town. The kickball gods however were smiling us that night and we had some new comers finally show up, Jonny Tran (not in Fast Five) Gregg Daly, and Matt (Chris). Also with a late display of his dedication, Dave Big Papi, reluctantly confirmed his spot on It Burns mush to the delight of Kristin.

It Burns started the game cold at the plate. Molly with her restless leg laid down a bunt that ended up in the 3rd baseman’s hands and then Lauren got gunned out while running out her kick. She would later also be placed on the DL with a quad injury (for those playing fantasy there are no more DL spots and you must start dropping players) There was a glimmer of hope in the 1st when Nethom got on with two outs and Big Papi came to the plate. He boomed a shot deep into right only to have it miraculous caught with a one handed pull down by a female on Kick Nuggets. Visibly shaken It Burns took the field.

Nethom got the call up to be the starting pitcher, even though he conveniently lost his kickball shirt and dawned a sleeveless Uconn Jersey. We can let it slide though bc they are national champs. In any case he pitched a real gem, must of be the tank top. With the iron curtain that was our fielding backing him up, we held them scoreless through 4 innings. It was not until the 5th that we allowed a single run and it was off a botch catch by yours truly and a off point throw to first that allowed the run to score.

Some key plays were by Heather who really used her body to stop the ball, Ashley proving to be a top recruit in right, Dave showcasing his range in the outfield by tracking down the ball, Matt showing why he is on the team by sacrificing the body, and Gregg showing his reach at first to stop arrant throws by me and others. Rich held down the plate and aside from the almost collision/make out with Nethom had a good outing as well. I would also like to note that Rosie would have had some plays had I not been stealing anything that came her way.

It Burns after starting off cold was able to put up a total of 5 runs over the course of the game. Mastering the bunt Molly got on base and eventually scored. Matt hustled out a single and made it home with some heads up base running. Heather made it on base without having to Pete Rose into the bag at all. Dave had his usually towering shots, Gregg added in some as well. Rich late in the game fired a laser at Kick Nuggets pitcher who now may have a matching WAKA tat with one of our team members. Sorry for the lack of detail however at this point I was more than half in the bag and trying not to see the Calamari from Salute make another appearance. No one else was really able to fill in the blanks for me either.

However it would not be a game if the now famous Luk-a-Zuk Shuffle didn’t make an appearance. This dance crazy that is sweeping the nation once again came here to Hartford. It was not a dance off but Gregg and Toni caught the fever! With 1 out and a ball hit in the air, instead of holding the bag until it is caught, they all decided to just leave it to fate and try to take the next base. Once realizing the mistake they break into the Luk-a-Zuk and however good their moves are, they are eventually called out as the ball is calmly thrown to the base. Jonny Tran, who has obviously not seen the Utube video, just ran to 2nd after a fly ball was caught. Luk will be leading dance rehearsals in the cafĂ© this week so everyone knows the moves next time.

Wear Cleats

Ladies and Gentlemen of 2011 WAKA Kickball Leagues,

Wear cleats. If I could offer you only one tip for future kickball games, cleats would be it. The long term benefits of cleats have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis or
reliable then my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice....now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your kicking abilities. Oh, nevermind, you won't understand the power and beauty of your kicking abilities until they've faded, but trust me in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of
yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how many potential homerun opportunities lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. Your sweep of the leg is not as bad as you imagine.

Don't worry about a dropped ball in the outfield, or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum.

The real troubles during your game are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind: the kind that blindsides you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday, or that baserunner that started at first, rounded second and advanced all the way to third.

Do one thing every week that amazes yourself, and everyone else cheering on your team from the sidelines.

Sing. (it keeps the team spirit up)

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts if you know that there's a hottie on another team that has a crush on you; don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss. (before every game, because you never know who's going to be close enough to notice at the sponsor bar later)

Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The season is long, and in the end, it's really about having a blast and hopefully making it to the Founder's Cup.

Remember compliments you receive on your reffing; forget the insults, but study the rules, please. (if you aren't succeeding in this, check with season leadership and they're always happy to help).

Keep your old love letters from flames on both other teams and your own; throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch. (before every game)

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to drink at the sponsor bar postgame. The most interesting people I know didn't know what they wanted when they first walked into the bar; some of the most interesting veteran players still don't and change it up each week based on the specials.

Get plenty of Calcium. Be kind to your knees -- you'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll make it to Founder's Cup, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll win your league championship, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll win your league's regular season; maybe you'll win the 'team most likely to call out sick on Thursdays' award at the End of Season Party.

Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself, either. Your team's chances are part recruiting, part spirit, and part making sure you have 4 guys and 4 gals to field a team each week. so are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body: use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or what other people think of it; it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own to kick away, bunt, catch and slide.

Dance...even if you have no where to do it but on the field after a huge win against your rival team.

Read the rules (if you don't follow them, the refs will call you out on it. ).

Do not read beauty magazines; they will only make you feel ugly. But the weekly blog most certainly will not, so make sure you check this thing out all the time.

Get to know your teammates; you never know when they'll have to miss a game for something silly like work or a family vacation.

Be nice to your refs: they're going to be making the decisions while you play. Duh.

Understand that seasons come and go, but you should always work hard and have a blast during each one of them. Work hard to bridge the gaps between
geography and lifestyle and the other teams in the league, because the further into the season we get, the more you're going to need to know who's going to boot the ball deep into left field.

Accept certain inalienable truths: bunting will happen, plays will fall apart, you too will get tagged with a ball in the lower back(ish) area; and when you do, you'll probably be okay with it.

Respect your refs.

Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you are 40, it will look 85. And nobody hits on an 85 year old at the bar, right?

Be careful whose drinks you buy, but thank those who supply yours. Postgame drinks and flip cup are a part of the spirit of the game;
Embrace it.

And trust me, on the cleats.

Thunder Week 2: The Week of the Rivalries

Are you wondering how veteran teams are looking this year? Interested to see how some roster trades are working out this season? You should get some answers this week. Check it out..

Opening Day Recaps

Foxes – 6 vs. Kick me w/ your best shot – 2

From the Foxes:
THE FOXES ARE BACK. Meaner, leaner, and just as green. And also just as drunk. But this time we’re actually winning.
As the horn tolled at 6:19 (it did? Maybe because we were banished to field E, which is the equivalent of table 9 ala the Wedding Singer)… but we heard no horn. Regardless, we started the game solid with a nice homerun by Jeff “Best Lifecoach Ever” Green. A few shutout innings by both teams, and we ended the game with six points. Potentially with another homerun. As per usual, the recapper was too drunk to remember the actual plays of the game other that Dave “Overkill” Baletsa taking a free willy dive into first base for sport. MVP goes to Krystal “I’m too cute to be mean” Bishop, because she asked for it. But I’m sure she deserves it… even if only it’s to piss Jeff off.
Shenanigans continued at Sidewalk as per usual with a giant flip cup game against the FURM project (which facebook tells me DOESN’T stand for Russell Morris… really? Ok). We won. We won a lot. After that… the rest of the night is a blur for all of us. Till next week…

From KMWYBS:
Ok, so our first game was a bit of a bust. We have a plethora of excuses, which include missing some players, the rain, the cold, and most importantly, the lack of booze-drinking by some teammates who shall not be named. However, don't underestimate us. We may be a new team with mainly rookie players, but we will dominate the field after we sort out a few kinks along the way. Rookie, Jon Frasaaa (he's single, ladies), showed a lot of promise when his first ever career hit (kick) got him to third and more importantly, drove in yours truly. Co-captain, Gary Bo-vin, then showed he would sacrifice his own at bat for the betterment of the team by kicking a ball deep and high enough so that Frasaaa could tag up easily, scoring our second run. We may have had a few bobbles in the outfield, but also many good catches and outs, especially from our first base(wo)man, Lauren. We have potential, we have energy, and we certainly have flip cup skills...and we'll bring it all to next week's game.

Kickin It Old Skool won 5-4 against Oxymorons

It was a close game, but Will Sanders sealed the win by making the last out in Left Center as Oxymorons left their runners stranded on base. Leading the team on the mound was pitcher Cassie Duke and contributing to the win was John Cashman, making a sick double play at first base.

It Burns when I kick-8 vs. Team Swayze- 11

From IBWIK:
Neither wind nor rain nor dark of night could stop opening day of kickball season from happening. In the early time slot It Burns When I Kick faced off against Team Swayze in a battle of newbies vs. veterans. Forever injured Erica and Elvin (and later Kristin) took in the view from the sidelines of this quite eventful opener. Here's what they saw:
It Burns When I Kick took the field in their new “ice grey” shirts, otherwise known as “lackluster gray”, “baby elephant grey” or “overcast sky gray”. Quietly, Dave jogged out to left center field, wondering if he made the correct choice to defect from his team last year.
Team Swayze’s experience showed early on as they jumped out to 4-0 lead after 2 innings of play. A dejected Dave looks over at Field A and sees his old team circle the bases. Nethom was called in to relieve starting pitcher Lukas with a Z. An effective move as he held Team Swayze scoreless for the next couple of innings. Meanwhile, It Burns When I Kick was able to string together some kicks to tie the game at 4-4. Limited thanks to one of the few kickball veterans Nick, who was seen kicking and missing violently at strike 2 in one at bat. Lucky for him there are unorthodox categories of strikes and foul balls that are counted separately so he didn’t strike out. Otherwise he would have been flogged unmercifully in this space.
Clearly momentum had shifted as IBWIK tightened up their defense highlighted by Lauren making a nice running catch in right field to end an inning. Coaches, spectators and softball scouts noted her cerebral play in the field backing up plays and hitting the correct cut off men. IBWIK took the lead 7-4 in the bottom half of the 4th inning on well placed kicks and aggressive base running. Even the ref behind the plate made a comment wondering when It Burn When I Kick finally figured out how to play. An additional run was squandered when Nethom, obviously new to coaching third in kickball, held Heather with 2 outs as the ball was relayed in right field. He’ll find out later in the game she had the speed to make it home. Fans were even treated with Molly doing the Luke-A-Zuke shuffle between 1st and 2nd after a questionable pop fly was dropped in center field. As she danced between the bases she was forced out at second.
As daylight and time were running out, Team Swayze’s experience resurfaced in the last inning. Coupled with some fielding miscues including Nick's drop of a bunt and Luke’s successful attempt to chest stop a ball in right center. And yes that includes the ball dropping to the ground. For you regular readers, Luke adds WAKA on his chest to go with his ASA tat’ on his forehead. And just like that Team Swayze regained the lead 11-7.
Needing 5 runs to take the victory, IBWIK didn’t lay down. They stayed aggressive on the base paths highlighted by Heather’s amazing head first dive into 3rd. Instant replay showed her dive was definitely necessary as the 3rd basemen’s throw sailed right over her head as she slid safely in. But the comeback was squashed when Team Swayze’s center fielder made a nice running overhead catch on Dave’s boot in the last inning for the second but very big out.
In the end, It Burns When I Kick learned a lot about kickball strategy and that should payoff down the road. And individually, Dave learned that his old team won convincingly 5-1. Stay tuned because the media will definitely be keeping a close eye on how “The Decision” plays out.

From Team Swayze:
Team Swayze is back after a one year lay off after losing in the finals to the Pink Balls of Fury in 09. Consisting of several veterans and many new WAKA players, Team Swayze got off to a solid start to the season with a come from behind victory over "It burns when I kick" after scoring six runs in the 5th inning.

Ball Kickers-5 vs. There Goes the Neighborhood-1

New comers to the league, Ball Kickers, proved to be a force to be reckoned with by beating There goes the Neighborhood 5-1. Ball Kickers were lead by their pitcher Shawn Dreyer who pitched a great game and kicked in 2 runs. Kyle Kowalski and Jeff Araujo played awesome defense to help the team to victory. Ball Kickers are looking forward to week 2 ... Who's Next!!!!

Nailed at the Plate!-15 vs. Kickin It-0

For those of you who don’t know us, please let us introduce ourselves. Hello, our name is Nailed At The Plate, and we consider ourselves a melting pot of kickballs finest. A medley of gamers from New Haven’s Ivy League, Farmington’s Storm League, and some of your favorite classics from Hartford’s Kickin Grass and Taking Names. We roam the field in burnt orange, kick some balls, flip some cups, and rock the Kaboombox. You know, the kind of people that you want to bring home to Mom or take to a hotel for a long weekend... To break it all down, you’re gonna wanna know us and you will more than likely need a gatorade when we are finished... cause your legs are shaking.
On the cold, dark and wet opening night, NATP faired well in its first game vs. Kickin It. A few strong numbers from the Ryan Duet with an rhythmic tag out at 2nd by Kim and handful of RBI’s solos from Rarely Cleated Bill. Joe Money also contributed by giving up his body for a run stopping center field catch... He cradled it like a baby.
A couple shout outs:
-To the 3rd basewomen of Kickin It... solid play and attitude ladies, way to go hard!
-To the 3rd base refs... they really got your team name right with Ball Kickers cause you girls are fierce. You rock, thanks for sticking it out in the cold and being well versed in the rules.

Rain, Rain, Go Away, Thunder Ballers Want to Play

Rain? Please. That doesn't stop kickball. Yes, I'm aware it was a chilly yesterday, but the season is still young. Kudos to everyone for braving the elements yesterday. I hope that the warmth of the bar afterwards was well worth it.

Great first week everyone! We got started the closest to 'on time' as we could have, given it was our very first week. Next week, just please keep in mind that moving forward, we need to make sure we get started at 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. so that we don't run out of daylight. Also, we are playing 6 innings or up to 1hour of time this season. This should help better accomodate our big rosters.

**Rule Clarification: Games are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Teams are allowed a 15 minute grace period, but this 15 minutes is included in the one hour of play time alotted for each game. Example: Team A is waiting for their fourth girl to arrive at the field. The 15 minutes begins at 6:00. If she arrives at or by 6:15, the game may begin, but there is now only 45 minutes to play. The next game is still to begin at 7:00 p.m. 'We started late' is not a reason to play later. Once you hear the airhorn (which will be louder than last night) Games must end.**

I'd also like to address reffing. By now, you all should have had a chance to at least skim over the rules. They are available at the field and on the website. If you EVER have a question about a rule, please ask any member of season leadership and we're happy to help you. If there is a call that you absolutely feel is a game changing problem, please call a timeout and chances are there is a member to help out either on your field or at the next one over.

Back to fun things! I can probably speak on behalf of most veteran players that most of us were late to work or are currently struggling in our own hurtlockers today. To rookie players I say proudly, Welcome to Kickball, your Thursday mornings will never be the same. There was flip cup on pretty long tables last night and I can assure you that that'll only increase once it warms up and the patio is open. I was THRILLED to see such a great turnout!

Since I'm a huge fan of parties, I'd like to let you all know that there is a WAKA Social at Sully's this Saturday night, May 7th, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Same drill as usual: $10 donation at the door for Coors Light drafts until the kegs are kicked and some food from Lena's. (BTDubs: their food is delish!) Sully's will be offering specials for kickballers as well, so come down and party. Flip cup and beer pong on the patio, as always.

Captains, make sure you're sending your recaps and scores to ct.gmot@gmail.com NO LATER THAN FRIDAY MORNING so that the standings can be updated and the recaps can be posted here. Please also be sure to 'follow' this blog so that you can comment on posts here and get updates on parties, fundraisers, bar crawls and other league updates!

See everyone Saturday, and Happy Tequila Day!!!!!

CT Thunder Spring '11: Week 1 Schedule

Ladies and Gentlemen, or more appropriately, children of all ages,
I present to you the schedule of games and reffing assingments for Week 1. I know, I know, you're all excited. I get it, really. I may or may not start sleeping with my cleats on Tuesday nights.
Returning players: a reminder; New Players: a word of advice- Get to the fields as early as you can so that we can get games started on time. When you hear the horn, that means its time to start playing. This season, we'll be playing 6 innings, or 1 hour-whichever comes first. Starting games on time is key because we don't have lights at Colt Park, so please keep it in mind.

Captains, be sure you have refs for the games you've been assigned. You'll need 3 refs per game.

T-shirts will be handed out tomorrow night at Game 1 as well, so please get there extra early for that as well.

If games are cancelled, I'll send out an email and update the website by 4:00 p.m. Keep in mind that if its not lightning, thundering, or flooding the fields, we'll probably be playing.

See everyone tomorrow!!!
